M. Night Shyamalan’s “The Village” was a surprising film. Not for its plot twist in the third act (which I found fairly predictable), but for its change in tone for the thriller director. Though this drama has its fair share of eeriness, its romance is what shines through, garnering it a spot in this race. With fantastic performances, foreboding cinematography, and strong chemistry between both Bryce Dallas Howard and Joaquin Phoenix, it’s well worth the watch. It just isn’t Shyamalan’s best, and in the end it doesn’t earn the gold of Movie of the Year.
