MOVIE REVIEW: “Nobody” stars Bob Odenkirk (Better Call Saul [TV series], Incredibles 2), Aleksey Serebryakov (Leviathan, Van Goghs), Connie Nelson (Gladiator, Wonder Woman [2017]), Christopher Lloyd (Back to the Future, Who Framed Roger Rabbit), Michael Ironside (Top Gun, Starship Troopers), RZA (American Gangster, Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai), Araya Mengesha (Anne with an E [TV series], Mystery Hunters [TV series]), Gage Munroe (The Shack, Immortals), and Paisley Cadorath. It is directed by Ilya Naishuller (Hardcore Henry, The Medic [Short]) and written by Derek Kolstad (John Wick, The Package).

When a group of petty theives rob his home, family man Hutch Mansell (Odenkirk) seeks payback, uncovering his past as an assassin and challenging dangerous forces that try to stop him.

What would end up being my first in-flight movie (I flew in a plane for the first time in my life a few weeks ago), “Nobody” tells the tale of a family man who you don’t wanna mess with. Yes folks, he’s got a dark past; one that includes a specific set of skills. When some punks try to rob his place, the chips fall and killer Bob comes to play, showcasing his prep for this action-packed flick via fight sequences and shoot-em ups.

“Nobody” is a fun movie, albeit a hollow one. There’s not much to it besides some action and cool music, making the hour and a half venture a breeze. Odenkirk destroys the role, easily being the best part of this picture. I’ve loved watching him in comedic and serious roles (“Better Call Saul” anyone?), but this takes a step further by allowing him to be an action star. The choreography is solid, and he makes it believable. Of course, you have quite a few silly moments (I couldn’t help but laugh at an aging Christopher Lloyd taking out bad guys with a shotgun), but for the most part these filmmakers pull off the story they’re trying to tell.

Really, what it comes down to is story weight. There’s an innate sense of style with this film (which I love), but the fact that nothing is really gathered from the narrative (aside from Bob being a distant husband/father who gets redeemed) makes me walk away disappointed. Not that I had high expectations for this. I mean, look at the trailer; it’s basically the same formula as “John Wick” but with a kitty bracelet instead of a dog being taken away.

If you’re looking for an entertaining watch, “Nobody” stands strong. It knows what it is and doesn’t try to be much more. I respect the style, and appreciate how it doesn’t dilly dally with its loose structure. Obviously, I’d like more depth, but clearly that wasn’t the mission with this one.
