January Movie Rankings

Boy oh boy, is this the longest time between month and monthly rankings? Sorry about this. I’ve got a few reviews on the docket I want to release this month, but cannot really post until these rankings are up. So, I am finally doing them. You’re welcome.

#6- “The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension”
70%= Burnt Popcorn
Pros: Wickedly original, entertaining, fun cinematography, and all-star cast.
Cons: Incredibly stupid (makes your mind melt) and fairly confusing.

#5- “Looper”
89%= Juicy Popcorn
Pros: Fresh concept, great performances, entertaining, and solid visual effects.
Cons: Wish there were more development of the characters, particularly young Joe. If he was carved out more, I would’ve felt more for his character.

#4- “Just Mercy”
91%= Juicy Popcorn
Pros: Solid performances, engaging story, powerful electric chair scene, and a strong message.
Cons: Familiar theme/storyline.

#3- “A Quiet Place”
92%= Juicy Popcorn
Pros: Fun concept, good cinematography, great acting (and chemistry), and puts you on edge.
Cons: I guess if there were anything to pinpoint, it’d be how I wish there were more to the story. It’s a short feature that solves small issues, but doesn’t do a whole lot.

#2- “Marriage Story” (2019)
93%= Juicy Popcorn
Pros: Brilliant performances, frustrating character development, fantastic dialogue, beautiful film score, and an interesting look on marriage.
Cons: Some of the motivations behind the characters were unfulfilling.

#1- “1917”
94%= Juicy Popcorn
Pros: Fantastic cinematography, thrilling story, fun adventure, and an experience unlike any other.
Cons: There isn’t much to the story or characters.

“1917” has claimed victory over the first Movie of the Month title of the new decade, and will go on to face all the other monthly winners to decide who will be 2020’s Movie of the Year!
