2019 SEPTEMBER MOVIE RANKINGS:

It’s a few days late, but the latest movie rankings are here. Surprisingly enough, I’ve stepped further into the foray of horror, with a few more review entries given to this year’s big-buzz thrills (granted, one was more of a comedy and the other was lackluster). Maybe more of this genre will be analyzed in the near future. Fall is finally at our doorstep, and along with pumpkin spice and the color orange, horror flicks are even more accessible than they ever have been. We’ll see what happens. As for now, here’s the rankings for last month.

#5- “Brightburn”
65%= Burnt Popcorn
Pros: Interesting concept, solid cinematography, and good acting.
Cons: Ending gives no sense of closure or satisfaction, film caters more to gross-out horror than a developed plot, and the only drive/point of the movie is to watch this “what if” concept.

#4- “It Chapter Two”
70%= Burnt Popcorn
Pros: Hilarious, entertaining, good performances, memorable moments, and good cinematography.
Cons: Story is stretched thin between its characters, some arcs are dropped and/or underdeveloped, quite a few plot devices make no sense, and the tonal shift of this sequel can be disappointing (even though it is funny).

#3- “A Most Violent Year”
71%= Burnt Popcorn
Pros: Great cinematography and setting, solid music score, somewhat engaging dialogue, and good acting for what it’s worth.
Cons: Character development is severely weak, specifically in the main character. There weren’t really any stakes or consequences, leaving me with a rather abysmal experience.

#2- “The Peanut Butter Falcon”
75%= Juicy Popcorn
Pros: Heartwarming, fun, nice idea, good chemistry between two leads, pretty good acting, and an overall enjoyable experience.
Cons: A few story elements are a bit too coincidental, certain emotional/relational development was rushed, and the ending felt very disconnected from the overall film.

#1- “The Limey”
92%= Juicy Popcorn
Pros: Unique way of editing, awesome performances, fresh take on a simple story, gets better as time goes on, and very inventive.
Cons: The beginning took a while to get off the ground and there were a few scenes/characters that didn’t seem to push the story.

“The Limey” takes September, and will face off against “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” “Green Book,” “First Man,” “The Pilgrim’s Progress,” “Avengers: Endgame,” “Toy Story 4,” “A Few Good Men,” “Django Unchained,” and the rest of the month winners to see who will be the next Movie of the Year.
