“Van Helsing”

MOVIE REVIEW: “Van Helsing” stars Hugh Jackman (The Wolverine, The Prestige), Kate Beckinsale (Underworld, The Aviator), Richard Roxburgh (Mission Impossible II, Sanctum), David Wenham (300, The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers), Shuler Hensley (The Legend of Zorro, After.Life), Will Kemp (Mind Hunters, Step Up 2: The Streets), Kevin J. O’Connor (The Mummy, There Will Be Blood), and Elena Anaya (The Skin I Live In, In the Land of Women). Van Helsing (Jackman) is a trained monster hunter that works for the Vatican. When he takes out Mr. Jekyll, he is then given the task to go to Transylvania with friend Carl (Wenham), and take out Count Dracula (Roxburgh) before he brings a bunch of his offspring to life and take over the world. When he arrives in Transylvania, he is greeted by a Gypsy Princess named Anna Valerious (Beckinsale) whose family has been trying to kill Dracula for years because of a an ancient curse that’s been passed down. It is up to them to kill Dracula and save the world.

I always felt interested in the folklore and horror stories that surrounded characters like Frankenstein, Dracula, or Werewolves. Watching this movie gave a fun experience and if you enjoy that kind of world, I am sure that you are in for a treat! The story is riveting, starting off on a strong pace. It does tend to slow down in plot and drag in places though, mainly towards the middle of the film. The acting is great, having seen most of these actors from other films. It does have funny parts in it as well like the character of Carl. His lines tend to be the comic relief of the movie. The setting is great and the photography is awesome, with many dark colors and tones. It also has great special effects and the costume work done on the monsters is fantastic. Other than the movie dragging in some places, another con would be how this movie tends to get silly or cheesy at times. Like whenever Dracula is talking and starts walking on the ceiling for no reason. Some stuff just doesn’t make sense. Overall, this movie did a great job and I recommend any fantasy movie lover or action lover to watch this movie! FINAL SCORE: 85%= Juicy Popcorn
