FRIDAY NIGHT MOVIE REVIEW: Last night I got to see a movie that I have been kind of wanting to watch called “Pompeii” which stars Kit Harington (Game of Thrones, How to Train Your Dragon 2), Carrie-Anne Moss (Disturbia, The Matrix), Emily Browning (Sucker Punch, Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events), Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (Lost, Thor: The Dark World), Jessica Lucas (Cloverfield, Evil Dead), Jared Harris (Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, Lincoln), Joe Pingue (Drive, The Book of Eli), and Kiefer Sutherland (24, The Lost Boys). This movie is based on a true story of what happened to the city of Pompeii when its massive volcano erupted, covering the city in ash and fire, killing everyone. The story is centered on a slave named Milo (Harington) whose entire village and family was killed by Romans, making him the last of his heritage. Not only is he a slave, but a gladiator who fights and kills everyone in the arena. One day he, as well as the other gladiator slaves, are transported to Pompeii to fight in a special event, walking alongside Princess Cassia (Browning) and her friend Ariadne (Lucas). Milo and the princess eventually fall in love with the each other on the way to Pompeii. When Milo gets to Pompeii, he is held behind bars with the champion of Pompeii, Atticus (Akinnuoye-Agbaje), who he is told that he will fight the next day at the special event. Everything changes the day of the special arena event though when Pompeii’s volcano erupts, having every citizen in Pompeii trying to flee to the harbor. Milo then has to find the princess and save her from dying by the volcano. I thought the movie was okay. When I saw the trailer, I thought that it would be like a Titanic movie where it is a big intro and all the action and downfall would be at the very end of the movie, but I was wrong. Basically it felt like less than half of the movie was the intro while the rest was Pompeii tearing apart, which you would think is good, but it isn’t. The movie didn’t give time to fully develop characters, making the movie feel very short and leaving only time to watch a volcano erupt. The special effects were good and the acting was okay for the pros. Overall the movie was average, but not the best. FINAL SCORE: 68%= Burnt Popcorn
