JUNE 2018 MOVIE RANKINGS:
Another month gone by, with us trudging our way through this summer of movies. It wasn’t that eventful for me, but I was able to catch a few flicks before closing out the month, with some more reviews sure to come in July. Read on, as June claims its victor!
#5- “Splash”
61%= Burnt Popcorn
Pros: Fun performances, good atmosphere and cinematography, and young Tom Hanks.
Cons: The story is dull, the romance leaves more to be desired, and it follows several tropes within its genre.
#4- “Annihilation” (2018)
76%= Juicy Popcorn
Pros: Interesting concept, cool world-building, scary monsters, and unpredictable.
Cons: The acting was sub-par (besides a few good performances), the characters weren’t fleshed out well enough, and the ending was shaky.
#3- “Thoroughbreds” (2018)
76%= Juicy Popcorn
Pros: Fantastic cinematography, original, great performances, and awesome work by Anton Yelchin.
Cons: A bit too weird for my taste and too difficult to understand, in terms of direction and chemistry amongst lead stars.
#2- “Coco”
86%= Juicy Popcorn
Pros: Stellar animation, great music, good voice acting, and is very entertaining.
Cons: Highly predictable and the plot seemed to be of an elongated short film.
#1- “Scarface”
88%= Juicy Popcorn
Pros: Brilliant directing and cinematography, awesome performances, and gripping action sequences.
Cons: Tony Montana could’ve been carved out more as a lead character, as the film focused more on violence and him turning into a psycho.
Though it isn’t a highly rated Movie of the Month, “Scarface” takes home the gold, and will compete against “Glengarry Glen Ross,” “Blade Runner 2049,” “Darkest Hour” (2017), “Avengers: Infinity War,” “Isle of Dogs,” “Dances with Wolves,” and the rest of the months to declare the next Movie of the Year.
