AUGUST MOVIE RANKINGS:
Of course, being as how I have transitioned into college, the amount of reviews that I have generated has dropped to a far lesser amount than what I had in July. However, I am still reviewing, so that is always a good sign, and I plan to keep it up, even if the amount of reviews that I churn out isn’t above 20 a month. Anyway, read on and figure out who won this month. It’s been an interesting thirty-one days to say the least.
#7- “Left Behind” (2014)
7%= Burnt Popcorn
Pros: They tried?
Cons: Atrocious acting, flimsy/agonizing storyline, terrible ending, and pointless.
#6- “Suicide Squad”
70%= Burnt Popcorn
Pros: Solid acting, good song choices (although poorly transitioned), good cinematography, fun characters, and somewhat entertaining.
Cons: Lousy villain who shouldn’t have been chosen for the Squad to fight (too powerful for regular humans), choppy editing, and spoon fed the plot.
#5- “A Hologram for the King”
71%= Burnt Popcorn
Pros: Great cinematography, good acting, funny, and has some deep moments and themes.
Cons: After the first thirty minutes or so, the script takes off in many directions, making it confusing to figure out what is the point to the story.
#4- “Jason Bourne”
72%= Burnt Popcorn
Pros: Fantastic action scenes, good acting, thrilling final battle, and it’s nice to see Matt Damon back.
Cons: Story held little weight, nothing new, and they left it open for yet another sequel.
#3- “Kubo and the Two Strings”
85%= Juicy Popcorn
Pros: Beautiful style and stop motion, great landscapes, interesting symbolism, good voice acting, entertaining, and wonderful characters.
Cons: Disappointing ending and lost its touch after the first act.
#2- “Colonia”
89%= Juicy Popcorn
Pros: Chilling, intense, original story, great cinematography, cool location, and great acting.
Cons: Little character development, quick pacing, and took a while for the story to leap off the page.
#1- “Frank” (2014)
90%= Juicy Popcorn
Pros: Weird, original, interesting, good acting, mesmerizing, and has a deep tone.
Cons: A good portion of the movie wasn’t going anywhere.
Surprisingly, “Frank” has been chosen as August’s Movie of the Month. It will go up against “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2,” “Sicario,” “The Martian,” “Batman Begins,” “9,” “Aliens,” “Midnight Special,” “Finding Nemo,” and the rest of the months in order to decide which film will be crowned Movie of the Year! Stay tuned for the next review.
