“The Kings of Summer”

FRIDAY NIGHT MOVIE REVIEW: Last night, I saw a movie that I have never heard of before called “The Kings of Summer” which stars Nick Robinson (Melissa & Joey, Frenemies), Gabriel Basso (Super 8, The Big C), Moises Arias (Hannah Montana, Nacho Libre), Nick Offerman (Parks and Recreation, We’re the Millers), and Erin Moriarty (The Watch, Red Widow). When I first put this movie in and got the menu screen up, I thought that this movie was just another one of those “direct-to-DVD” movies since I’ve never heard of it before and didn’t recall it ever coming to theaters. But I was quite wrong when I watched it. This movie follows a 15-year-old named Joe Toy (Robinson) who doesn’t enjoy his life that much ever since his mom died. Him and his dad, Frank (Offerman), don’t get along at all anymore always cussing at each other and he really only hangs out with his best friend Patrick (Basso) who has bad parent’s of his own which are so strict and annoying that they literally give him hives. One day, Joe’s crush, Kelly (Moriarty), invites him to an outdoor party and he skips out of dad’s family game night with a girl he met to got to the party. While there, an old guy chases all of the partiers off of a beach property and in all the running and confusion, Joe gets stuck walking through the woods with one of the weirdest people ever named Biaggio (Arias) who eventually serves under him with loyalty. While walking through the woods, they stumble upon a nice, serene open area of grass hidden by trees. Joe gets an idea and gets Patrick and Biaggio to build a house with him there so that they can run away from home and become their own men without their parents there to annoy them. I thought the movie was actually good, surprisingly and it was also kind of weird too in many ways. The acting was good, the story was a new one for me, and it was very funny in parts. The best character that made this movie what it is for me is Biaggio because he is just one creepy dude in every scene that he is in. Anyway it was a good movie and I do recommend anyone to see this because most likely not many have really heard of this! FINAL SCORE: 83%= Juicy Popcorn
